BHS SCHEDULING UPDATE:
It has now been a few weeks since a work group comprised of students, parents, teachers, board and community members met to discuss priorities around the school schedule. Engaging in dialogue around the complex issue of scheduling is challenging work. Identifying multiple stakeholder priorities is critical to the process. What resonated clearly was the need to continue engaging students and more families in the process. One of the proposed schedules has much potential including shorter blocks of instructional time. To implement such changes with fidelity teachers need ample time to plan for this change.
Last week it was shared with the Teacher Leadership Council (comprised of teachers representing BHS departments) that we were holding off on changes in order to engage with voices not yet heard and to plan thoughtfully and long term. The Teacher Leadership Council members were asked to share with their departments. The next step was to share with those who participated in the work group followed by this announcement! Next steps moving forward will be included in a BHS Connections before the end of the school year.Your continued input to this process is important. You will ensure that the needs of students stay at the forefront.

Community Input Meeting
BHS is considering changes to the student schedule next year in order to provide improved opportunities and experiences for all students at the high school. Our teaching staff have been working the past few months on developing proposals for the new course schedule. Student input has already been gathered through student advisory groups and through innovation classes. This meeting will be an opportunity for students, parents, community members, and staff to give further input before final decisions are made and presented to the administration.

Update on Academic Scheduling Process
Burlington High School has had essentially the same schedule for close to twenty years. We have a four block schedule that allows for equal amounts of instructional time for every content area. The blocks are eighty five minutes in length. Staff who have been at BHS since the four block schedule was introduced, almost two decades ago, say that they were to be given the opportunity to revisit the schedule after a couple of years. More than a couple of years have passed and there have been many changes in technology, brain based research on learning, the community and our world.
Schools are much different places than they were twenty years ago. Schools are learning communities that are moving towards proficiency based learning and flexible pathways to graduation driven by students’ personalized learning plans. Students can benefit from keeping up with the changing world.
In September the Teacher Leadership Council, representative of the departments performed and After Action Review of scheduling at BHS. We asked four direct questions to help us understand where we were and where we need to be:
- What was expected to happen?
- What actually occurred?
- What went well and why?
- What can be improved and how?
Working towards solutions and not focusing on what used to be or other factors over which we do not have direct control, the Teacher Leadership Council worked together. They identified priorities and non-negotiables that help students towards proficiency in our graduate expectations. This work was the agenda for regular and ongoing meetings throughout the Fall. Council members were asked to bring back information to their departments to gather more feedback. The Teacher Leadership Council members worked very hard and had many professional and passionate discussions about student learning.
Several models that are researched based and practiced in other schools were proposed. We shared and discussed these models with staff and students. The ideas were discussed at monthly parent coffee meetings. During advisory, students engaged in conversations around what works and what does not work for them. Students in both the middle and the high school were asked to complete surveys about elective courses. Students in School Innovation Seminar were key in participating in consultancies to help think about the schedule in fresh ways.
Research and Student Input
We referred to and collected research on school schedules that consider length of instruction for different content areas. We considered “what does brain and educational research tell us” We looked at research around allocated time to instructional and non-instructional activities, engaged time when students are actually in learning activities and academic learning time which is described as the “precise period when an instructional activity is perfectly aligned with a student’s readiness and learning occurs.”
All of this information has been included in decisions that are being made to best serve students. Students were the focus of each conversation. What has been proposed includes more flexible options for length of instruction, a schedule that aligns with the Burlington Technical Center, preserves advisory and provides lunch periods that better meets the needs of our students while allowing teachers important time to work together. In December this process was shared at a public board meeting and was met with positive feedback.
Students will make course selections in the coming weeks that will further help make decisions. There is no proposal for course reductions in any schedule models that have been introduced. Teacher contact time with students remains the same as it currently exists. The proposed new schedule has a Mon/Wed (Blue Day) and Tues/Thurs (White Day) to align with post secondary schools for dual enrollment options, benefiting many students. Students will have a schedule on Friday that is neither the traditional Blue nor White day that will combine classroom instruction and additional opportunities to support growth towards the graduate expectations. Schedule models that may have been shared to this point reflect the teacher’s schedule that includes professional learning time, not the scheduled time for students being planned. The proposed new schedule includes teaching modules (blocks) that can vary from course to course (e.g. some language courses will be offered daily for less than the current eighty five minutes every other day) better in line with learning needs. The proposed new schedule aligns better with the Burlington Tech Center allowing students, who select Tech Ed as an option, more high school course opportunities. The proposed new schedule will include time for teachers to collaborate to make our school an even better place. Scheduled learning experiences are being developed to enhance our school during the time teachers work together, supporting flexible pathways and building community. There are plans for students to attend full days and be engaged five days a week. Students will start school everyday at the same time to develop consistency in their routines. As the schedule model becomes concrete, more information can and will be shared. Insuring that our best ideas can be implemented before they are communicated as final is critical. There are details that are key to making decisions final.
Again, there is no diminishment of instructional minutes, we are simply restructuring what is available to us. Making decisions that impact many is challenging work that must be done to seek continuous improvement. To not make changes is to not grow and learn. Schools are learning communities, and as such must continue to learn along the way.

Next week BHS has 2 "special schedule" days. On Wednesday, 10th and 11th grade should arrive to school by 8:05 (for Pre-ACT and PSAT testing), and 9th and 12th graders should arrive for a 12:30 start to classes. Lunch will run from 11am - 1pm. Classes will end at the usual 3:05pm time. On Thursday, we run a half day schedule 8:05am - noon. Lunch will be served from 11am - 12:30pm.
School neighborhood special busses will continue to run as usual, in the morning and the afternoon. BHS does not get special busses to accommodate these changes in the schedule. Please plan accordingly.

We are holding this meeting on October 5th, from 7:30 - 8:30AM in the BHS Auditorium.
